What are the essential elements of an international business plan?
The development of an international business plan requires both careful planning than an investment in time.
As with any business transaction, the decision to export should be considered in a long-term perspective rather
than a commercial commitment in the short term. Before engaging in international trade agreements,
the development of the business plan proves an important step, to see if the product is ready to be exported.
A well developed business plan, helps assess the potential of the product on the international markets,
facilitates accessibility to financial resources, indicates to what market the product is adapted and
allows to estimate the costs to export.
Aims and objectives of export: indicate what you want to accomplish by having access to an export market. Describe short and long-term goals.
Target market: here is the place where you can demonstrate the knowledge acquired in the course of the
research on the international market. Try to describe the following topics:
- Market target and industry structure
- The consumer analysis and projection of the demand for the product or service
- Competition and market share
- Channels of distribution and promotion
- Government regulations (restrictions on trade, the import rights, documentation)
- Challenges and opportunities identified in the target market
- Cultural factors.
Delivery: indicate how it intends to deliver the product or service to the target market and why this election is appropriate.
Marketing plan: this section is the most important of the export plan and should include the following elements:
- Sales strategy
- Pricing
- Promotional strategy
- Channels of distribution
- Customer service
- Tracking methods.
Sales forecasting:
- Monthly for next year forecasts
- Annual forecasts for the next few years.
Production plan:
- related to the physical installation needs
- machinery and equipment
- raw materials
- inventory-related needs
- suppliers
- staff required
- estimate of the costs of production.
Risk assessment:
- Reaction of competitors to the entry of the company in the market?
- Emergency plan for potential problems?
- The political and economic situation in the market under risk presentetelle?
- What critical internal and external factors on this market which could have repercussions on the company?
Implementation and development: describe the steps to follow to achieve the objectives
export. Include details on the role of different stakeholders, the tasks to be undertaken and deadlines.
Evaluation of the performance of the market: describe the methods to be used for tracking and
measure progress on the market.
Financial statements: include the balance sheets of the previous year and the statements of income.
Financial forecasts: include revenues and cash flow forecasts.
Financing and capitalization:
- What are the needs of funding?
- Financing services to use (e.g., Government, Bank)?
- The political and economic situation in the market under risk presentetelle?
- What critical internal and external factors on this market which could have repercussions on the company?
Aspects to be considered in the development of international business plan?
After having mobilized resources, conducted the study and be familiar with the sources of support,
the exporter should develop international business plan. However, in order to overcome barriers that may impede exports,
the company should:
Seek assistance of qualified expertise:
Companies that have little or no export experience or those who want to expand their activities to new foreign markets,
do not often get qualified assistance they need before developing the international business plan.
Obtain management commitment:
Before the development of the plan, the official in charge of developing a strategy of entry into a foreign market,
must obtain commitment to high-level executives at the company. To strengthen the confidence of potential financial and foreign partners,
leaders must show their determination to overcome the initial difficulties and financial requirements involved in export.
The company Manager and the directors of each Department: accounting, finance, logistics, marketing, research and training,
must understand and approve the plan of expansion in the export of the company.
The plan must include a detailed curriculum vitae of each of the senior managers of the company.
A study of market well designed and detailed:
In many cases, the content of the international business plan lacks strength in market research.
This is only a simple tool to strengthen the intuition of exporters on the fact that a product is accepted or not in a given market.
This is obtained by observing the behaviour of a small group of potential clients to the design, the size,
color and other characteristics of the product, by sending samples to determine the preferences of potential consumers in general.
The business plan must also include the assessment of the market factor. Pool consists of a diagnosis of thirty
questions dealing with trends of demographic, political and economic developments in the country,
allowing the exporter to postpone each country on a scale based on the market conditions

- Une source d'informations sur l'environnement des affaires au Sénégal et dans le monde;
- Un réseau d'échanges d'opportunités;
